UK Blimpband: 120Mbps

19 10 2005

The
Engineer Online
reports that a trial airship floated at 24k, (15 miles) for nine
hours, supporting data rates of 11Mbps and throughput up to 4Mbps, using IEEE802.11b.
The airship should be able to provide service at distances ranging up to 60km (37
miles). Project head Dr. David Grace stated that “Proving the ability to operate
a high data rate link from a moving stratospheric balloon is a critical step in moving
towards the longer term aim of providing data rates of 120Mbits/s.”
